I love mushrooms – but here in NZ they are either hard to get or quite expensive. So let’s grow our own. I bought this kit at the local Mitre 10 (do you count a shop 20km away as local? We live in the Wairarapa – so 20km, yep, that’s “local” :-) )

A bag with straw, a manual, plastic wrapping – and a freepost envelope to order the “seeds”. Hey, stop. Mushrooms don’t have seeds. They use a starter-kit (called seeds – wheat with mushroom spores) to get everything going.

It’s quite easy to use. Fill the bag with water and let it soak over-night.

On the next day drain the water.

Add the “seeds” – looks like wheat containing mushroom spores.

Ready to go – cover it and put it into a dark spot in the house (not complete dark, just out of the light).

After about two weeks they start to “grow”.

Huurrray! Mushrooms – ready to eat.

My litte quality control inspector :)

Yummy breakfast!

So, you might now say – hey, that’s a few hands of mushrooms for $40 – yep right, the kit itself would be quite expensive but my plan was to use it as a starter kit for bigger bags. I’ll add some pics tomorrow – more, no HEAPS, of mushrooms :-)
